After his disappointing Ghosts of Mars, John Carpenter returns with the horror film The Ward. Unfortunately this is another failed attempt at recapturing the essence of his past films. The movie plays like a hybrid of Shutter Island and Sucker Punch with a dab of Cuckoo's Nest thrown in to the mix. And it fails.
There are a few jump out of your seat scares but it's just not enough to rescue this film from a poor script, weak direction and overall lack of acting skill. Amber Heard seems to be amiss lately with her selectivity in movies. I think someone needs a new agent.
