New To Blu: A Better Life

A Better Life is one of the most compelling dramas I've had the privilege of seeing in the past year. It's a simple character piece that explores a broken bond between father and son. It's also a film that exposes a culture and it's willingness to succeed despite many harrowing obstacles.

While the film may be a bit slow for some, I'd ask that you give the movie a chance as it truly excels at developing a strong sense of character amid a very sincere piece of movie making. This is one the only recent movies I've seen that captures a character's emotional journey and allows the viewer to witness his growth throughout this piece of excellent story telling.

Initially I thought this film was about the father. When giving it some some thought, A Better Life is actually a film about the son's respect and love for his dad even though he doesn't agree with all the choices he's made. It is also about the son's maturation and ultimate growth in to a respectable member of the community, versus being a violently vicious member of a local gang.

Demian Bichir (Weeds) gives the performance of his career as Carlos Galindo. He not only plays the character, but defines the absolute essence of a man that is seeking a better life for himself and his son. His mannerisms, facial expressions, and overall depth of character were perfect for this role.

If you haven't seen it, go rent it or buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Fans of The Visitor will like this movie as it features some of the same themes.
