Cinematic Releases: The Grey

After my last two cinematic excursions were absolute disappointments on an epic scale, along comes The Grey and sets the bar extremely high early on in 2012. The movie not only reinvigorated my sense of what daring cinema is about, but heightens my expectations of what's to come in the spring and summer. If The Grey is a sampling of the successful films of 2012, I say bring it on. I'm ready for it. The movie is great!

Always a fan of Liam Neeson, I truly felt this was his best dramatic work since Schindler's List. He doesn't act in this movie, he inhabits the role and pushes his talent to the absolute edge with his convincing portrayal of a man pushed to the brink of humanity at the further most limits of the world.

Director Joe Carnahan (Narc) once again steps behind the lens and delivers us an absolutely stunning piece of work. The Grey is by far his best work and definitely pushes his directorial career beyond that of most modern directors. This is his third great movie out of seven. That's quite an accomplishment.

I don't have one complaint about The Grey. It's an edge of your seat, never by the numbers, thriller that captures both sides of nature, good and evil. If you don't see this in theaters, you are truly missing out on what will be one of the best movies of 2012.
