Cinematic Releases: Lawless

Lawless is the exact movie I've been waiting for this whole summer, if not years. It is a near perfect period piece that captures the lawlessness of a bootlegging town during the great depression, all the while telling the story of the "immortal" Bondurant family. Not since Miller's Crossing have I seen a period crime drama this enthralling with such powerful and dynamic performances.

Shia LaBeouf made a distinct choice to steer clear of blockbuster films from here on out. And it was a good decision. This is the best role of his career as he finally delivers  an emotional depth of character that's been lacking in every one of his past films. With a supporting cast that features Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and Jessica Chastain, I'm sure that task was a bit simpler. However, this is LaBeouf's movie and this is the film that will move him forward as a charismatic leading man.

Lawless is honestly a great film that gets the highest mark from me for depicting a true story while faithfully portraying this family's struggle through prohibition and the violence that ensued. As crime dramas and period pieces are two of my favorite genres, Lawless is one of the best films I've seen this year.
