Article: The Future of Star Wars

By now we've all heard the big news. Yes, Disney has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. and all properties associated with the brand. Also, we now know that they plan on releasing a new trilogy of Star Wars films, supposedly picking up from Episode VII. As a child of the 70's, I could not be happier but I'm still feeling a little bit of hesitation about someone else picking up the Star Wars mantle and carrying the franchise further. Part of me says "Hell yeah!" and another part of me feels that it's time to leave well enough alone.

The original Lucas vision was a trend setting one that changed film forever. Now, we get Twilight movies and films like Cloud Atlas that audiences simply ignore. This is my fear. Will they dumb down the franchise and turn it in to some mind numbing peace of cookie cutter crap? Some will say that this trend already started with The Phantom Menace. I say it was still a Lucas property and give the man credit for even trying to carry  on the franchise knowing that fan boys would unite and still bitch about Jar Jar to this very day.

Let's face the facts. When Star Wars was released in 1977, nothing like it had been made. It was a fantasy film blended with sci-fi that that told the age old story of good vs. evil. I've got to wonder if a new Star Wars film by someone else will truly hold up in this era of film. Some will say Peter Jackson should direct it. No. He's turned in to the exact kind of director that should keep his Hobbit milking paws off my beloved Star Wars. If anything, he'd be worse than Lucas. Realistically, I cannot name a great director that could take over the franchise right now and to do so would be absolute speculation.

My only hope is that they DO continue the Skywalker tale with either the Heir To The Empire or Dark Empire story lines. Both of these stories would transpose well to film. I wouldn't mind seeing a Luke Skywalker gone over to the dark side at all. Mark Hamill could still play the character.

I guess in the long run, I'll be happy to see the franchise continue but I'm gonna laugh when all the fan boys start crying that this new trilogy doesn't have the "Lucas" feel and he should have stuck around to produce. Well, you get what you wish for. Lucas is gone. So, when you decide to cry a river of Bantha piss that someone didn't do a good job replicating the original tone, I'm going to laugh at you.......an evil Palpatine laugh.......and then I'll toss your sorry ass in the Sarlaac.

Please comment below. I'd really like to know your thoughts on where Star Wars is headed.
