Weekend Box Office: 1/19-1/22 - Shyamalan Scores Big As Rogue One Crosses the Billion Mark

M. Night Shyamalan has made an official comeback. After years of film fans trouncing his work, the man is an official box office magnet again. With the release of  The Visit, he finally got back in the good graces of most naysayers. But with this weekend's release of Split, the studio took in $40 million against a meager $10 million budget. In other news, the action genre got a nice little shot to the arm with XXX: The Return of Xander Cage hitting the exact numbers as expected by the studio.

Alongside this weekend's great box office numbers, the one off Star Wars: Rogue One toppled the one billion dollar mark becoming the 28th film to ever hit that huge number. Hidden Figures continued to outperform with another $16 million as the critical darling La La Land brought in another $8 million.

It's looking like the theaters are doing extremely well in the new year as unexpected hits continue to thrive.
