Although the critics (such as us) were not very kind to Ayer's stymied attempt at bringing the Suicide Squad to the big screen, the film went on to one of the biggest box office grosses of 2016. Obviously, Warner Bros. is hot and bothered to get a sequel to the film made as soon as possible. With Ayer not interested in returning to the fray of comic book films after his dreadful experience, a short list of directors is quickly coming together.
The first big name that's been mentioned is Mel Gibson. With his mega-comeback Heartbreak Ridge getting Oscar nods this year, he has been mentioned and is a contender for the directorial spot. Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) is also being eyed, while Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) are also included in the early running for the film. It won't be surprising to see more added to this list in the coming days. Obviously, Gibson would be a prime candidate. He's got a great sense for action and creating believable characters. Now, we wait.
