Casting News: Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman Rumored For The Girl in the Spider's Web

News hit today that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was getting another theatrical entry with Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez at the helm. After the 2004 death of original author Stieg Larsson, the book series was revisited by a new author, David Langercrantz. He continued the novel franchise with The Girl in the Spider's Web which brought Lisbeth Salander back for another treacherous adventure.

For some reason, this latest cinematic incarnation will not bring back the excellent Rooney Mara as Lisbeth but will once again recast the character. Her interest has waned in reprising the part despite the Oscar nomination she received for Fincher's domestic remake of the feature film. As of right now, both Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are the two actresses being mentioned to take over as the lead player in the new movie.

While both of them could add their own dramatic take on Lisbeth, the character may be too off center and not mainstream enough for them to tackle. The dark themes of the books may also be a turn off to either great actress. They could always bring Noomi Rapace back, also.

We'll continue to follow this casting as the film gets closer to production.
