Last week, estimates for this third cinematic incarnation of the web slinger were mixed. Considering that many people were questionable about the character getting another iteration so fast after the failed Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield, the brand is on the comeback with Tom Holland leading the character to reinvigorated goodness. With Spidey finally able to rejoin the ranks of his other Marvel properties, the famous teenage hero was able to snag a massive domestic opening.
Initial reports had Homecoming's opening tally sitting somewhere around $100 million and lower estimates ranking between $80-90 million. Now, as Sunday closes out, the real numbers are in and Spider-Man just tallied $117 million for the weekend. This is huge news for Columbia, Sony Pictures, and Marvel Studios.
With only a few days in release, the movie has already regained a huge percentage of its $175 million production budget. At this point, it's a massive success that will definitely spawn tons of sequels.
