News: Gillian Anderson To Retire Dana Scully After Season 11

After years of playing Dana Scully over the course of nine seasons, two movies, and two return event series, actor Gillian Anderson says this next batch of episodes will be her last. She is officially retiring the character of Scully when the next chapter closes. When being interviewed by Screen Rant, she stated that she didn't feel like the character had any closure and that her character and fans deserve some type of finality to the ongoing saga of Scully and Mulder.

Here's an excerpt from that discussion:

Are you still open to continuing on beyond this season?
Gillian Anderson: No, no, I think this will be it for me.
So, why did you want to do this season?
Gillian Anderson: Because it felt like it wasn’t over. It didn’t feel like we necessarily deliver everything the fans were expecting of us last time, and so it was that.
How much will you miss her if this is really it for you?
Gillian Anderson: I don’t know. You may need to talk to me in a few years about that once I finally shut the door. You know, there’s always been this “maybe one more” thing hanging over, but when the door is finally shut, call me up and ask me that question again.

With Annabeth Gish returning as Agent Reyes and the pairing of Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose coming back this year, it may seem that The X-Files might take a new direction when this Season 11 closes out.
