News: Hilary Swank To Star In The Sci-Fi Film I Am Mother

Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby and Boys Don’t Cry) is set to star in the sci-fi thriller I am Mother, which has begun shooting at Adelaide Studios in South Australia. First reported by Variety, Swank will be joining actress Clara Rugaard (Good Favour) in what is being described as a unique mother and daughter story. It was written by Michael Lloyd Green and will be directed by Grant Sputore, in his feature length directorial debut. Green's script was part of the 2016 Black List.

In the story, Rugaard plays the first child of a new generation of humans that have been raised by "Mother," a robot that has been designed to repopulate the earth following the extinction of mankind. Their relationship is threatened when a blood-soaked woman (Swank) appears, calling into question everything Rugaard has come to learn about the outside world.

Sputore spoke about the adding the talented Swank to the cast, saying that:

"It is a privilege to welcome Hilary Swank to our film. She is a remarkable performer who always brings tremendous commitment and honesty to the screen. I’m excited about the journey ahead with Hilary and the talented Clara Rugaard."

WETA Workshop has designed the "Mother" robot. They are the top level effects team that has worked on films such as Avatar and The Lord of the Rings series. The film is being financed by Australian based Hercules Film Investments, with additional assistance from from Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation in association with Adelaide Film Festival, Screenwest, Lotterywest, Fin VFX, Blockhead and Kojo.
