News: Rian Johnson Tapped To Create A New Star Wars Trilogy

Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has been tapped by Disney and Lucasfilm to write and direct a new trilogy of films that will be under the Star Wars banner, but will be set in a completely different part of the galaxy with a whole new set of characters. The news was announced by Disney chief Bob Iger during the company's conference call to discuss its full-year and fourth quarter earnings. No release date has been set for this new trilogy.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said that:

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

In a joint statement, Rian Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman said:

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films."
