Months ago it was speculated that Gillian Anderson would exit The X-Files after the conclusion of the season 11 event series. Fans across the globe were taken aback at her decision to quit the role that's defined much of her acting career. Many had hoped that she would change her mind and would still consider returning to the role of Dana Scully. Now, with the first episode hitting in two days, the actress has confirmed that she is officially done with the series and the FBI agent that made her a household name.
When speaking with TV Insider, the actress says that she has made her final decision and that the X-Files is no longer what she wants to do:
“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me. I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement…because my understanding was that this was a single season.”
Obviously, she could still change her mind if a 12th season comes to fruition, but it seems that she's quite headstrong about leaving Scully behind after decades of playing the role.
