F. Gary Gray is reportedly the first choice for Amblin and Sony to direct the Men in Black spinoff film. Gray's recent films include Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious. According to Deadline, negotiations are currently taking place for him helm the spinoff, which was written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.
Sony has been looking for ways to reboot the franchise. Sony had discussed the idea of a Men in Black 4 starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. There was also an idea that would have crossed the 21 Jump Street comedy brand with Men in Black. Neither of those plans worked out for various reasons.
The plan is to introduce new characters and relaunch the franchise, much like they did with Jurassic World. The studio has set a June 14, 2019 release date for the new Men in Black film.
