News: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Being Developed Into A BBC Miniseries

Terry Pratchett’s fantasy book series Discworld is being developed by BBC Studios as a six-part limited series, which is currently going by the working title of The Watch. First reported by Deadline, it is being written by Simon Allen (Strike Back, Das Boot). The BBC looking to make the project a major international co-production, and end up being a returnable franchise.

The series is being produced by Pratchett’s production company, Narrativia, which is being run by his daughter Rhianna and former business manager Rob Wilkins. Discworld takes place in the fictional Discworld, a flat disc balanced on the back of four elephants who stand on the shell of a giant turtle, the Great A’Tuin. The books often parody or are inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Charles Dickens, and Wiliam Shakespeare.

Pratchett published 41 Discworld novels up until his death in 2015. The popular series has sold more than 80 million books in 37 languages. Details are scarce in the project, but reports seem to indicate that it is a revival of a project first announced back in 2011, which would tell stories about the Ankh-Morpork City Watch and was described by Pratchett himself as “Pratchett-style CSI.”
