News: CBS Films Acquires Van Gogh Film Starring Willem Dafoe

CBS Films has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to At Eternity’s Gate, a drama about Vincent Van Gogh’s starring Willem Dafoe. It was directed Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and The Butterfly), with Van Gogh being played by Willem Dafoe. It also features Oscar Isaac, Rupert Friend, Mads Mikkelsen and Mathieu Amalric.

It is being considered and awards season film, with the 7-figure deal including an Oscar qualifying run and platform release late 2018. Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work was widely panned when he was alive, but would become one of the best know and influential artists after his death. In 1886, he moved to Paris where he met members of the avant-garde, including Paul Gauguin. The film will exlore Van Gogh's creativity and the sacrifices that he made to produce his art that is widely recognized around the world. This isn't the first film to look at the painter's life and art, which includes Lust for Life, Vencent and Theo, Vincent, The Eyes of Van Gogh, Dreams, Van Gogh, The Yelow House, among others.

“Julian Schnabel’s work as filmmaker speaks for itself and his success as an artist of many disciplines makes him uniquely qualified to tell the story Vincent van Gogh,” commented CBS Films President Terry Press who continued, “we look forward to working with him to bring audiences this riveting exploration of art, genius and legacy.”
