News: Lost In Space Renewed For Season 2

Lost in Space has made its comeback and the Robinson family has taken their adventure into space to Netflix. The rebooted series premiered on the streaming giant on April 13th (You can read our review here). Just over a month after it premiered, Netflix is officially renewed the sci-fi series for a second season.

According to the Nielsen ratings, it had 3.16 million viewers on its first day of release, which was the third best premiere day behind Stranger Things season 2 and Bright.

Co-creators Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless said shortly after the show's release that they were already hard at work on the second season. Speaking to IndieWire, the duo stated that:

"The details are pretty well worked out. There’s obviously a deep backstory of the robot and the causality of what caused this whole world to happen, and we’ve definitely figured that part out… We are working on scripts and hoping that if we get a green light we’re ready to go. We’ve had a lot of thoughts about it, and hopefully, if everyone watches it, we’ll get to see more adventures of the Robinsons, because we do have some crazy stuff planned out that we really hope we get to film.”

With no viewership figures being released by Netflix, it's really hard to gauge how successful the show has been since its premiere. It's received mix reviews from critics so far, so it's to really say whether Netflix will ultimately decide to renew the series.

Lost in Space is a reboot of the 1965 series of the same name (itself a re-imagining of the Swiss novel The Swiss Family Robinson), following the adventures of a family of pioneering space colonists whose spaceship veers off-course. The new series was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and produced by Legendary Television, Synthesis Entertainment, Clickety-Clack Productions, and Applebox Entertainment, with Zack Estrin serving as showrunner.

It stars Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson, a fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer taking her family on the mission to colonize Alpha Centauri for a new life on a better world; Toby Stephens as John Robinson, a pilot, former U.S. Marine, and husband to Maureen; Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson, the 11-year-old son and youngest child of Maureen and John Robinson; Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson, the 18-year-old eldest child of Maureen Robinson and step-daughter of John Robinson; Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson, the second-oldest Robinson child; Ignacio Serricchio as Don West, a roughneck mechanical engineer who also smuggles luxury goods; Parker Posey as Dr. Smith, whose real name is June Harris. (The name is a tribute to June Lockhart, who played Maureen Robinson in the 1960s series, and Jonathan Harris, who played the original series' Dr. Smith). June Harris is a criminal and a sociopath who uses other people’s identities to claim their belongings.

"The Robinson family, part of a highly trained mission to establish a new colony in space, is unexpectedly pulled off course forcing them to crash land on a lost planet."
