News: Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey Remaking The Color Purple as A Musical

Word is breaking that Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are pairing with Quincy Jones and Broadway producer Scott Sanders for a film revival of The Color Purple. The new movie will be a musical based on the 2005 stage version that starred Cynthia Erivo in the lead role of Celie. The original movie was released in 1985 with Spielberg in a directorial position. The movie starred Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg who both went on to Oscar wins for their performances.

The 1982 novel by Alice Walker chronicled the main character Celie as she battled racism and living in a lower social circle in the south during the 1930s. No word on who will be helming the project has been released yet. Spielberg and Winfrey are set to be in producer roles on the new adaptation.
