News: Park Chan-wook Directing Violent Western ‘The Brigands of Rattlecreek’ from the Writer of ‘Bone Tomahawk’
Master
South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, best known for his celebrated Vengeance trilogy including Oldboy and Lady Vengeance as well as his recent critical hit The Handmaiden, has been making more
than a few international splashes in the film world. In 2013 he directed his first
English-language feature with the Mia Wasikowska thriller Stoker before making his first foray to the small screen with the
English-language AMC Networks/BBC television series The Little Drummer Girl in 2018.
Earlier
today, news broke Mr. Chan-wook is returning to the silver screen in the
English language once more in the form of a brutally violent upcoming Western
thriller entitled The Brigands of
Rattlecreek. Slated to star Matthew
McConaughey, the film produced by Bradley Fischer (Shutter Island) and written by S. Craig Zahler of the cult
ultraviolent western Bone Tomahawk and
the prison thriller Brawl in Cell Block
99 was picked up for distribution by Amazon Studios. According to the press release, the film concerns
a sheriff and doctor who “seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the
cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a
small town”.
With
much of Chan-wook’s work being revered around the world, particularly in the
west, and given the critical acclaim of the already celebrated Bone Tomahawk as well as the impending
release of the writer-director’s Dragged
Across Concrete, The Brigands of
Rattlecreek is shaping up to be a match made in cinematic Heaven! Stay tuned for further details as this
