News: Park Chan-wook Directing Violent Western ‘The Brigands of Rattlecreek’ from the Writer of ‘Bone Tomahawk’

Master South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, best known for his celebrated Vengeance trilogy including Oldboy and Lady Vengeance as well as his recent critical hit The Handmaiden, has been making more than a few international splashes in the film world.  In 2013 he directed his first English-language feature with the Mia Wasikowska thriller Stoker before making his first foray to the small screen with the English-language AMC Networks/BBC television series The Little Drummer Girl in 2018.

Earlier today, news broke Mr. Chan-wook is returning to the silver screen in the English language once more in the form of a brutally violent upcoming Western thriller entitled The Brigands of Rattlecreek.  Slated to star Matthew McConaughey, the film produced by Bradley Fischer (Shutter Island) and written by S. Craig Zahler of the cult ultraviolent western Bone Tomahawk and the prison thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99 was picked up for distribution by Amazon Studios.  According to the press release, the film concerns a sheriff and doctor who “seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town”.

With much of Chan-wook’s work being revered around the world, particularly in the west, and given the critical acclaim of the already celebrated Bone Tomahawk as well as the impending release of the writer-director’s Dragged Across Concrete, The Brigands of Rattlecreek is shaping up to be a match made in cinematic Heaven!  Stay tuned for further details as this exciting news continues to develop!
