New to Blu Picks: March 26, 2019




Here are my top picks for films new to Blu-ray this week.

Perfect Blue (1997)
Shout Factory is releasing this animated psychological thriller in the US and Canada for the first time. Special features include a new digital remasters presentation of the film, the original SD version of the feature, the featurettes Lectures by Satoshi Kon and Into the Blue, and more.

JapĆ³n (2002)
The Criterion collection is releasing Carlos Reygadas’ existential journey through the Mexican country side for the first time on Blu-ray. Special features include a new 2K digital restoration, which was supervised by the director, a video diary shot by actor Alejandro Ferretis during the film’s production, the short film Adulte directed by Reygadas, a booklet featuring an essay by novelist Valeria Luiselli, and more.

TheStreet Fighter Collection (1974)
Shout Factory is releasing this Sonny Chiba classic and it’s two sequels in one box set. Special features include 2K scans of all three films, uncut version of The Street Fighter and Return of The Street Fighter, an interview with Sonny Chiba, an interview with filmmaker Jack Sholder, an exclusive poster, and more. 


Pet Semetary (1989)
Paramount Pictures is releasing a 30th Anniversary Edition of this Stephen King classic in 4K. Bonus Content includes an interview and commentary with director Mary Lambert, behind-the-scenes image gallery, and more.

The Suckling (1990)
Vinegar Syndrome is releasing a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack of this monster horror-comedy. Special features include a 2K scan from the original 16mm camera negative, interviews with the direct Francis Teri and actor Michael Gingold, reversible cover art, and more.





Opera (1987)
Scorpion Releasing has a new 3 disc limited edition box set of Dario Argento’s classic film.  Special Features include a new 2K can with color correction, multiple audio tracks, a reversible cover and limited edition mini poster. Available for purchase from DiabolikDVD.

If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
20th Century Fox has released Berry Jenkins latest film for the first time on Blu-ray. Regina King’s Oscar winning performance would make this worthy of any movie lover’s collection.

The Body Snatcher (1945)
Shout Factory is releasing this horror classic starring Boris Karloff, Val Lewton and Bela Lugosi for the first time on Blu-ray. Special features include a new 4K scan from the original negative, audio commentary with director Robert Wise and writer/film historian Steve Haberman, the documentary Shadows in the Dark: The Val Lewton Legacy, and more.

In the Cold of the Night (1990)
Vinegar Syndrome is releasing this neo-noir erotic thriller on a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Special features include a new 4K scan from the original 35mm negative, a behind-the-scenes featurette, reversible cover art, and more.

Dominique (1979)
Vinegar Syndrome is releasing this supernatural thriller for the first time on a Blu-ray/DVD combo. Special features include a 2K scan from the original 35mm negative, interviews with actor Michael Jayston and assistant director Brian Cook, reversible cover art, and more.
