Sympathy For Delicious is Mark Ruffalo's directorial debut. It's also a testament that a strange little indie film can also be one of the best films of the year. This film features one of the oddest plots I've seen in recent times and it honestly works.
While Ruffalo plays one of the main characters, we also get performances from Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis. While Lewis is right at home amongst her past characters, Bloom settles in with his first dramatic role in years playing rock and roller The Stain. Christopher Thornton, Ruffalo's best friend and co-writer, plays the main character Delicious D. They all succeed in their portrayals.
This is an odd film set against an urban backdrop of the homeless and crazy. Somehow they pulled it off with much success. While this may not be a a movie for everyone, I'm happy I gave it a chance. I hope we see more from Ruffalo as a director.
