The movie stars a who's who cast of classic crime film players. James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, and Vincent Curatola all take support roles while Brad Pitt steals the film with his darkest role in years. This is a return to the Pitt that starred in films like Kalifornia and 12 Monkeys. And it's a welcomed change. While he's always made wise casting decisions, this is probably the best he's done in years by breaking away from high budget blockbuster fare. Other support players include Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard, and Ben Mendelsohn.
Killing Them Softly is the rare success in modern crime films that tells a simple story through realistic presentation of characters that definitely exist in our world in some shape or form. As the movie unwinds, there is a strong underlying commentary on the current state of our economy and how it has not only effected the middle class but has taken a toll on the criminal underworld.
If you enjoy seedy crime dramas, you will definitely want to take the time to see this movie. I was impressed with the cast and superb attention to detail in the script. See it.
