Comics: Betrothed #2 - Reviewed

Amy reviews Betrothed #2

Betrothed #2 picks up right where episode one left off, with Tamara and Kieron facing their ultimate reality of either marrying one another or murdering each other. Because Tamara isn’t ready to be married, she shoots at Kieron, who learns he can utilize the heat from the bullet and redirect it to murder his enemies. Because of this, they are amazed to discover that they have natural instincts when it comes to fighting and realize that they must’ve been trained even though they can’t remember it. Despite this, they are still not fully ready to fight. Dervish, the seer of Priam, understands their vulnerability and creates a spell to transport them back to Earth, knowing they will only survive if they are together. Tamara and Kieron awkwardly end up at the school, wearing nothing but their pajamas. On top of this, whenever they travel between planets they are naked, which leads to an uncomfortable conversation over what could have possibly been seen. Tamara also reveals that she is a virgin, and while Kieron tries to make their both being virgins an advantage, he completely missed the point of what Tamara was trying to make in that she is a virgin by choice and doesn’t like being told who she will have sex with. On top of all this, they discover they are not the only ones who ended up back on planet Earth. Who is trying to kill them? Will their instincts be enough for their survival?

Once again, I thoroughly enjoy the humor in this comic, especially when Kieron looks at the outfit he has on when they arrive on the planet Priam and he asks to see a stylist. The main characters are more refined in this episode and have greater purpose, which I enjoy. I also love their energy and chemistry together and that they already fight like an old married couple. Their friends, Andy and Annaleigh, returned in this episode, but they were only on a few pages. I’m hoping they will have a larger role as the series goes on, because they are fun and their conflicting personalities add a humorous dynamic. There are also new characters that are introduced which are obvious they will have a larger part to play within this series. They are Tamara’s Earthly guardian, Uncle Swift, and Kieron’s Earthly guardian, Aunt Petra. Petra is a sorceress, and even though she is 300 years old, she still looks like she’s in her forties. Tamara’s Uncle Swift, or The Swift, is a scientist. I’m eager to find out more about them in the coming episodes.

The illustrations by Steve Uy are more intense, and have greater detail. I enjoy the bright vibrant colors that are given to Kieron during the battle scenes as he harnesses heat to defeat his enemies. The layouts are well-done and move you through each panel smoothly. Also, there is so much to digest, that a second slower reading would be helpful just so you can take in any details you might’ve missed. The ending of the comic is extremely dramatic and is a great setup for next issue. Betrothed #2 was released on April 4th, 2018.
