News: Steven Spielberg To Produce & Possibly Direct DC's Blackhawk





First Cathy Yan was announced earlier in the day to be taking on the untitled Birds of Prey project, now DC and Warner Bros. have landed an even bigger fish. It was announced that Steven Spielberg will produce the DC film Blackhawk, while also looking to direct it under his Amblin banner.

WB and Amblin recently had a successful partnership with the release Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. Spielberg is next lined up to direct the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise and West Side Story. Warner Bros.

Blackhawk was first published by Quality Comics from 1941-1956 and was created by Chuck Cuidera with input by Bob Powell and Will Eisner, first appearing in Military Comics #1. It was later published by DC Comics from 1957-1984. The Blackhawks are a small team of War War II ace pilots of different nationalities led by a mysterious man only known as Blackhawk. In the most well known comic book version , they operate out of a hidden base known as Blackhawk Island and battle Axis forces, flying Grumman XF5F Skyrocket. At the height of the comic’s popularity during the early '40s, it outsold every other comic book but Superman.

The screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Spielberg will serve as a producer along with Kristie Macosko Krieger, under Amblin Entertainment, while Sue Kroll will serve as executive producer under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner.

Spielberg exclaimed, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.’”

Emmerich stated, “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide.”
