News: Willow Sequel In The Works

Ron Howard recently spoke with and revealed that a sequel to Willow is in the works. It makes sense that there is some discussion about the film, seeing as he helped bail out Lucasfilm and Disney by directing Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The story of Willow was conceived by George Lucas in 1972. Bob Dolman was eventually brought on to write the script and went through seven drafts before completing the final draft in 1986. Howard directed the movie that featured Val Kilmer and Star Wars actor Warwick Davis in the title role. Lucas produced under his Lucasfilm banner, with MGM distributing. Now Howard has been thinking about revisiting the film. He said:

"I don't want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of Willow. We wouldn't call it Willow 2, I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved."

In the movie, Willow comes across the infant Elora, the female child with a special birthmark who has been prophesized to be the downfall the evil sorceress Bavmorda. Willow teams up with the charismatic swordsman Madmartigan (Kilmer) to help keep the child from Bavmorda's forces and prevent the sorceress from taking over the world.

Howard said that his experience on Solo helped with some ideas for Willow, saying:

"I thought about that movie a lot as I was working on Solo because there are certain scenes, especially around some of the Madmartigan stuff, was reminiscent of a character with that kind of swagger and bravado. And also some of the humor around some of the action in Willow was something I inspired to get into Solo."

There is still a long road ahead for the potential sequel and it is far from definite. The original was a moderate success does have a strong cult following amongst fantasy fans.
