News: Neill Blomkamp to Direct Robocop Returns: A Sequel to the Original Film

Neill Blomkamp has been tapped for the new Robocop sequel.

A couple years ago, Neill Blomkamp's visions for an Alien sequel that would ret-con Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection were dashed when the studio pulled the plug on the idea. Now, the science fiction director is getting another chance to try his legs at a classic genre property. He's signed on to direct the upcoming Robocop Returns which will be a direct sequel to the original films starring Peter Weller.

Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner wrote a planned script for the upcoming project a while back. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the upcoming Terminator sequel, will be reworking their script.

Nothing has been said yet as if Weller will be returning to the franchise or not, but one can hope. Deadline broke the news just a little bit ago.

The plot: anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.
