Box Office Endgame: Avengers Passes Avatar Domestic Record

It was bound to happen. People have been talking about it for weeks. And the inevitable has finally come to light. Avengers: Endgame has now surpassed James Cameron's Avatar at the domestic box office. With a massive opening of $350 million, the Marvel property has officially defeated Cameron's first entry in the Avatar series. With a current total of $770 million in the U.S., it just surpassed the $760 million made by the sci-fi epic in 2009. This is a major victory and further proof of how valuable of an asset these comic book movies truly are. The only movie standing in its way right now is the divisive The Force Awakens which took in $936 million domestically.

In the coming weeks, Endgame will continue to rally numbers even as the big spring releases start to hit. It will be interesting to see how far this thing can go and if it can eventually topple Avatar's worldwide gross.
