James Wan and Universal are in the process of teaming up for an untitled new monster movie. Following the success of last weekend's The Invisible Man, it is clear that Universal wants to remain in the monster movie business.
James Wan will be producing the film through his Atomic Monster banner and the untitled film is set to be written by long time Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson. Sources describe the film as a Disturbia or Rear Window type thriller, focusing on a group of teenagers who discover that their neighbor is building a monster in his basement and we can only assume that things get more terrifying from there.
The move to pick up another project like this reaffirms the studio’s choice of throwing out the interconnected monster movie universe concept that ended up tanking with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy. The plan now in the aftermath of The Invisible Man is to repeat what worked on that film and take a filmmaker-driven approach instead. Universal already has some monster-adjacent projects in the works from Dexter Fletcher, Paul Feig, and Elizabeth Banks. We are excited for what seems to be a new era in horror filmmaking from Universal Studios and can't wait to see what happens next.
