Streaming Updates: NBC 'Optimistic' About Launching Punky Brewster Series on The Peacock in 2020

By now we all know that multitudes of series and projects have been shut down, delayed, or altogether in flux due to the global health emergency that's transpiring. It's wreaked havoc on dozens of major studio films, television shows, and creative projects all around the world. Considering the nightmare scenario we're currently living through, NBC is still planning on launching their Peacock streaming service on July 15th, 2020. When the new platform launches, they have a bevy of new series that will be available along with revisits to several old brands including Saved By the Bell and the '80s sitcom Punky Brewster, which centered around an abandoned child and her pet dog that end up living with an older gentlemen in an apartment building. Each week saw Punky live through many trials and tribulations that were both enlightening and sometimes tear jerking.

The new show that they're currently working on is a ten episode 'event series' that will see star Soleil Moon Frye reprise her role as Punky and Cherie Johnson will return as her best friend. They're introducing a whole new cast of support characters when it returns for its short run story arc. Obviously, if it's a hit, NBC in partnership with Universal Television will make more. Their hope right now is that they can still get it into our living rooms before the end of 2020. Freddie Prinze Jr. will be playing her ex-husband in the pilot episode.

Peacock chairman Matt Strauss had this to say about their upcoming projects:

“We are very very optimistic that there’s a handful of originals that we will have. Brave New World, is essentially done, Psych movie is also done and some of the reboots like Punky Brewster and Saved By The Bell, we feel optimistic that we can also have them available in 2020 as well as a few others.”
