Perhaps the most divisive director in the history of Star Wars, Rian Johnson has taken to Twitter to praise George Lucas and his work on the prequel trilogy. Never one to mince words and never one to give in to rabid fan boy hate, the director of The Last Jedi says that he loves the way that Lucas handled Anakin's turn to the dark side and praises the technical prowess of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. Being the director of the second highest grossing movie in the entire Skywalker Saga, Johnson has taken his fair share of blame for the sequel trilogy but has maintained a great attitude the entire time. It's got to be hard being the focal point for so much backlash.
Now, he says he really thinks that the prequels were far ahead of their time and that Lucas maintains his work as a visionary film maker. Despite the hatred that both trilogies have taken, they've definitely helped expand the fan base and the galaxy of Star Wars, whether you love them or not.
Lucas made a gorgeous 7 hour long movie for children about how entitlement and fear of loss turns good people into fascists, and did it while spearheading nearly every technical sea change in modern filmmaking of the past 30 years.— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) June 29, 2020
