Comics News: DC To Release Wonder Woman 1984 Prequel Comic

Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Patty Jenkins’ long-finished, often delayed DCEU-sequel Wonder Woman 1984 have some relief in store as DC announces the publication of a one-issue movie tie-in prequel comic.

The comic (helpfully titled Wonder Woman 1984 #1) will be featuring two separate stories.

The first story is written by comics scribe Louise Simonson (Superman, X-Men) and Anna Obropta, an associate producer on the upcoming film, with art by Bret Blevins (New Mutants) and it deals with a robbery and hostage situation at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, while Wonder Woman’s alter-ego, Diana Prince is leading a group of kids there on a tour.

The second tale, by Marguerite Sauvage (Adventure Time Comics, DC Comics: Bombshells) and Steve Pugh (Hellblazer, Animal Man) involves somebody stealing WW’s Lasso of Truth (likely a regrettable decision).

The comic will get an exclusive release on September 20, from noted high-end comics retailer *checks notes* Wal-Mart, then it’s out digitally and at comics shops on September 29. The Wonder Woman 1984 film itself is set for theatrical release a few days later, on October 2nd.

Patty Jenkins is back at the director’s chair, and Gal Gadot returns as Diana/Wonder Woman, with Chris Pine again as (resurrected?) Steve Trevor. Comedy legend Kristen Wiig will be making her DCEU debut as the villain Cheetah.
