For fans of comic-adapted
movies and television who are experiencing Marvel fatigue, Amazon Prime’s The
Boys brings a darker twist to the classic superhero narratives. The show
takes place in a world where superheroes work for private corporations that
make billions by selling merchandise and movie tickets. When Hughie’s (Jack
Quaid) girlfriend is killed by a “Supe” in an accident, he is given a rare peak
behind the scenes and learns the truth: the supes don’t care about who they
kill or save. They kill hundreds of civilians a year and use their money, fame
and influence to sweep it all under the rug. In season 1 Hughie joins up with Billy
Butcher (Karl Urban), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso) to
take down the supes once and for all.
Based on a comic book series of the same name that ran
from 2009-2012 with 90 issues available, The Boys take on the seemingly
unkillable supes with little more than their brains, and a couple of big guns.
Season 1 was a roller coaster that left me on the edge of my seat for episode
after episode, and after binging it all in a few days I wanted more.
The
second season was confirmed before the first season aired and is set to be
released September 4th. New trailers and clips released by Amazon
showcase some new characters, including a new supe. Aya Cash is signed on to
play a new villain: Stormfront, an alt-right supe bent on turning Vought
Industries into a Supe factory, churning out powerful warriors for military projects.
Her name implies a connection to the neo-nazi organization of the same name, if
only in similarity of belief and goals. Patton Oswald has also signed on to
play an undisclosed character, a subject of much speculation among fans of the
comic series.
With
season 2 set to be released in a month, Amazon confirmed a season 3 at the end
of July, although no release date has been set. The second season dropping on
September 4th is set up to be a jaw dropping continuation of what
was already a thrilling first season, that I for one cannot wait to follow.
