Just when we thought the times could get any stranger, The CW comes along and options an animated series as a new live action television show. That's right. The television outlet has officially begun working on a new series that will be based on the Powerpuff Girls. They're quickly ramping up their projects going into the upcoming 2021-2022 season and the Powerpuffs are officially on the roster of new shows that will be premiering. This was initially announced way back in August but no headway had been reported on. Now it seems to be set in stone that they're moving forward.

The original series by Craig McCracken will focus on a modern story about three twentysomethings that are disillusioned that resent their childhood years of crime fighting. They may have to reunite against their better judgement to return to their previous lives of battling villains.

Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier are aboard as writers and executive producers on the new incarnation. The original show ran for 78 episodes from 1998 to 2005 with six full seasons. There was also an animated movie and a rebooted series in 2016. This will be their first live action project.
