I'll Reboot You, My Pretty: New Line Cinema Developing A New Take on The Wizard of Oz

It's that time again where we finally have a piece of news that isn't about something getting delayed by the Covid-19 crisis. While everything else is slowly starting to reopen, studios are developing and looking into whatever they can make when things get back to normal again. Yep, these stories will keep happening as the world tries to return to normal. This time, New Line Cinema is returning to The Wizard of Oz.

Nicole Kassell, who most recently directed episodes for HBO's Watchmen, is attached to direct the film. The folks at New Line were a fan of her visual style and knack for world building on Watchmen and felt that she would be the right fit for the project. The film is being described as a fresh take and a re-imagining of the classic story that will respect the 1939 film and L. Frank Baum's original book.

There is no word on who will write the film right now but sources mention that previous drafts were written by writers like Darren Lemeke. We imagine that Kassell will have some involvement with this as well. The film will be produced by New Line Entertainment, Temple Hill Productions, and Marc Platt. There is no word on when the film will start casting but we can imagine it will be sooner rather than later.
