How 'Bout A Cigarette?: Waterworld Television Series in the Works at Universal

Often hailed as one of the biggest box office failures of all time, Waterworld remains one of the most talked about bombs ever produced. But that's not stopping Universal Television from adapting the movie to a new television series. It's just been announced that the studio is currently working on a new series with Dan Trachtenberg attached as director of the project. Matching the tones of the film will definitely suit modern times as it chronicled an Earth covered in water long after the polar ice caps had melted. At the current time, it's being reported that the new entry will bring back the characters from the original movie 20 years later.

No word has been announced at this time whether or not the cast will return to star, but it would be an interesting twist. Kevin Costner could undoubtedly pull off the role of The Mariner again. Jeanne Tripplehorn and Tina Majorino both had roles in HBO's Big Love after their Waterworld turn. It would be seriously interesting to see them all back together for their journey on Dry Land.

The original film cost over $175 million to produce at the time, which now seems like a normal budget for any blockbuster release. The production went through various disasters including the destruction of much of the water based sets. We look forward to seeing where they go with this.
