Welcome Back: David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future Starts Filming

After a seven year directing hiatus that had many thinking he had retired, director David Cronenberg is finally back in the director's chair. And he's bringing back his old friend Viggo Mortensen for a new film. Joining Mortensen in the cast is Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos. The film is called Crimes of the Future and cameras are already rolling in Greece.

While there is no concrete word yet on just what the film is about, some ideas have leaked out. According to Variety, the film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis known as “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome” that alters their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of “transhumanism,” others attempt to police it. Sounds like that classic heady Cronenberg material we know and love.

Principal photography for the film is set to run until September. This will be Cronenberg's first original screenplay since eXistenZ back in 1999. Indie distributor Neon will release the film at now unknown date, presumably after a festival run with the film. This will be Neon's second collaboration with the Cronenberg family, having last year released Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor
