An Excellent Day For An Exorcism: Blum Says New Exorcist Trilogy Will Be "Fresh New" and "Really Scary"

It's a fact. No intellectual property is safe from reboots, remakes and sequels. Even in the case of the classic horror film The Exorcist this is true. For decades, Hollywood has continued to churn out continuations of the original film. Obviously, none other than The Exorcist III have been much to talk about. Now with Jason Blum behind the making of a new trilogy of films that will be directly connected to the 1973 it looks as though they're at least attempting to make something great again. We're not fully sure we believe him but when discussing the project with CinePop, the director and producer had this to say about the upcoming return to demonic possessions and how this will be connected to the first movie.

"What I hope to do with ‘The Exorcist’ is the same thing we did with ‘Halloween'. The first movie was great, and the second movie was okay, and the rest of them were not very good. And then we came in and kind of re-jiggered it, and people liked it, so I hope we can do the same thing with ‘The Exorcist.’ Everyone thinks we’re gonna fall on our face, but I think, we have the same filmmaker, the same writer, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. And I think we’ll reinvent ‘The Exorcist’ so that it’ll feel fresh, new, different, but, you know, related to the first movie, but also really, really scary.”

Whether any of this actually happens obviously remains to be seen. Reinvigorating classics typically doesn't work out and can tamper with their legacy. For now we'll hold our breath.

The first of the three films is scheduled to hit theaters in October 2023.
