Back in 2018, the science fiction body modification horror hybrid received an extremely limited release but it became and underground hit. Making a total of only $17 million between its domestic and foreign box office receipts, the film was in no way a success for the studio other than creatively. However, it was announced last year that a television series was in the works that would continue to story from the cult film that features some absolutely amazing fight scenes and a brutal set of kills. When speaking with Collider, Jason Blum commented on the work they're doing on the next chapter of the story:

"Upgrade should have been a wide release. I was pissed about that. We’re working on a TV show. So working on the scripts. The first round didn’t come out, I didn’t get the response I wanted to get. I don’t want to be in development. I want (a series) order. We’re working on the scripts again, so that we can get an order. And I don’t want to develop it.”

He continued about where the story lands:

"picks up a few years after the events of the film and broadens the universe with an evolved version of STEM and a new host – imagining a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity."

The director of the movie, Leigh Whannell is expected to direct the first episode of the series. No word has been released if Logan Marshall-Green will be returning to the role he played in the film at all.
