Another day, another Sci-Fi adaptation set to come from director Denis Villeneuve. After bringing the desert planet of Arrakis to life in his critically acclaimed adaptation of Dune, the Oscar nominated Villeneuve is not content to rest on his laurels. Especially when it comes to making ambitious science fiction films. It was announced today that he has now signed on to direct Arthur C. Clarke's influential novel, Rendezvous With Rama, for the big screen.

For those who have not read Rendezvous With Rama, the 1973 novel follows a group of human space explorers tasked with intercepting an alien starship that is hurtling through the solar system. It is believed that the missions will lead to mankind’s first contact with alien intelligence. The story takes place in the 2130s and seems tailor made for Villeneuve and his sensibilities as a director.

Villeneuve will direct the film for Alcon Entertainment, reuniting him with the company that produced two of his previous films: Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049. Alcon co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosov, Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary will also produce via their Revelations Entertainment banner. Freeman previously held the rights to the 1973 novel and has long sought many directors to bring the novel to the big screen for a long time. There's no word yet on when the film will head into production  but one can imagine that the second part of Villeneuve's Dune adaptation will come out before production on this film starts.
