Exit The Matrix: No Planned Future For The Matrix Series Says Producer James McTeigue

If anything is for certain, the latest Matrix sequel has had the same effect on its audience as The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The newest film has an extremely divisive response and is proving that this series may have overstayed its welcome way back in 2003. With Lana Wachowski handling the film on her own, it seems that the critical response and audience backlash is real. Yet, there is a large segment of its viewership that really loved what they did with the project and how it continued Neo and Trinity's legacy. Some were still holding out hope that The Matrix Resurrections might be the start of a new trilogy.

Well, those hopes are definitely going to be dashed. When commenting on the movie just last week, Wachowski said that there were zero plans to continue or start another entire trilogy. It was also revealed that Warner Bros. has been in pretty constant discussions about continuing the series even if Lana and her sister wanted no involvement. Apparently, discussions were fluid for years and nothing ever came to fruition (obviously) until now.

In light of fans' hopes for a continuation, producer James McTeigue, who worked on the previous trilogy and the new sequel says that there are absolutely zero plans to move ahead with another sequel or continuation. Although the movie had a relatively strong box office in its opening week, it struggled on streaming and became the most pirated film of last week. This definitely doesn't speak volumes for a studio attempting to make money.

McTeigue had this to say when speaking with Collider:

"We've got no prequel in mind. We've got no sequel in mind. We've got no further trilogy".

Obviously things could change at any time. Many have commented that this would have been great as a limited event series on HBO MAX. If they choose to go in that direction, it could definitely get interesting.
