A Box Office Disaster: Roland Emmerich's Moonfall Crashes at the Theater

Roland Emmerich's latest disaster film, Moonfall has proven to be the biggest box office flop of 2022 so far. The mindless science fiction armageddon movie that sees the director once again attempt to destroy the planet has failed miserably in the first weekend of its domestic release. Set against a budget of $150 million, the feature film made roughly $10 million in its first 3-4 days, including early Thursday night preview screenings. It seems that Emmerich's brand of destruction has begun to wear thin on audiences that might not want to see doom and gloom right now. Perhaps the lack of a real marketing campaign was a cause for its utter failure.

Emmerich's poorly conceived Independence Day: Resurgence was also a major disappointment for the studio. His last real hit was 2009's world destroyer, 2012 that starred John Cusack in the lead role.

Moonfall barely beat out Spider-Man: No Way Home this weekend, which made another $9.6 million. Johnny Knoxville and his crew of crazies took the number one spot with over $23.5 million, a totally unexpected tally. But again, maybe people were looking to laugh instead of watch the planet torn apart by a falling moon. Who knows? There's no rhyme or reason anymore.
