French star and former Bond Girl, Lea Seydoux will lead a new take on the classic erotic character, Emmanuelle. Audrey Diwan, director of Happening will be taking up directorial duties on the latest incarnation of Emanuelle Arsan’s novel for the silver screen. The project is being shopped at Cannes 2022 for the director’s first English speaking film. The character of Emmanuelle was popular during the ‘80s and was first made famous by actress Sylvia Kristel in the X rated 1974 film which was released by Paramount Pictures.

The character of Emmanuelle has been translated to the screen numerous times and became a highly popular adult themed late night feature on Cinemax during the ‘80s. The film spun off several sequels including the low budget knock off, Black Emanuelle which was not a licensed property and skirted legalities by changing the spelling of the name. Black Emanuelle even became part of the cannibal trend with Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals.

Seydoux previously starred alongside Daniel Craig in several 007 films and had a primary role in the dramatic film Blue is the Warmest Color. She has two upcoming films at Cannes this year including David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future.
