Maverick vs. Elvis: Top Gun and The King Battle For Number One Spot at the Box Office

The box office is in full summer swing now and is continuing to show signs of recovery after nearly two years of pandemic shutdowns. As Top Gun: Maverick crossed the one billion dollar mark at the global box office, it rose above the latest Jurassic World sequel and had a full on brawl against the newest Elvis movie. Numerous box office sources are saying that it was a hard call and an almost perfect tie between the two movies. The second Top Gun movie ended up bringing in $30,500,176 against Elvis which scored $30,500,000. This makes Top Gun: Maverick one of the biggest movies of the year and also proves that the legacy of Elvis is still alive.

With that small of a difference between the two films, it was being called a tie on most Sunday reports but Top Gun ended up coming ahead by roughly $200. This also proves that Maverick has serious legs. It's returned to the number one spot after being bested by Jurassic World: Dominion previously. It's not often that a movie returns to the number one spot after it falls.

Apparently, Elvis only would have needed two more screens in the U.S. to win out the weekend tally. And it had a bigger per screen average against Tom Cruise's latest film.
