2022 has been a rewarding year for Michael Mann fans. HBO Max released his long-anticipated series Toyko Vice, he has a new movie in the works, and is putting the finishing touches on the literary prequel/sequel to his 1995 masterpiece Heat. The novel, simply known as Heat 2, doesn't even come out until next month. However, it has already sparked questions about a possible big-screen sequel.

In an interview with Marc Maron, Michael Mann confirmed that he is already working on bringing the Heat 2 novel onto the big screen. He acknowledged that while he couldn't say much, he did confirm that a movie is in the works. Rumors have it that studios are clamoring to work with Mann on the sequel but nothing solid has been confirmed yet.

The biggest challenge for the film once it finds a home will be the casting. It has been almost three decades since the original film and the fact that this is both a prequel and sequel will surely complicate things. While it will be easy to cast for the before Heat parts of the story, one wonders how they will handle the segments set in the years after the original film. De-aging? Recasting? No one is sure how this will be handled just yet.

It will be a while before the sequel to Heat as Michael Mann is about to start production on his next film, Ferrari, very soon. In the meantime, you can check out the book version of Heat 2 on August 12th.
