The long discussed sequel to Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator is finally gaining some ground. Although there were numerous iterations of the script that would have seen Russell Crowe's Maximus return from the dead to star in the sequel, those ideas were scrapped in lieu of whatever Scott up his sleeve at this time.

The original Gladiator which was released in 2000 went on to gross just over $457 million worldwide and is considered one of Scott's greatest directorial works. Now, it looks like Scott is finally ready to move ahead as it's being reported that casting on the film is now underway with the director actively seeking his cast for the project.

It was revealed in 2021 that Ridley had completed work on the script for the project and was moving forward with the film. However, pandemic woes and other projects kept Scott from moving forward. There is no word on where the sequel will go quite yet but there is speculation that it could follow Maximus' son Lucius Verus originally played by Spencer Treat Clark. Clark was recently a co-star on the hit crime drama Animal Kingdom.

We'll update as we hear more.
