In a world that has audiences crying for original material and constantly commenting that no one is doing anything new or original, the dystopian action drama The Creator has turned into a major domestic box office dud for 20th Century Studios and director Gareth Edwards. The film which has some amazing visuals and a lackluster story wfas poised to be one of the biggest genre releases during the dumping ground season but has ended up being a massive financial disappointment for the studio and all those involved.
The movie which follows agent Joshua as he looks for AI intelligence and militant groups turned in a seriously low $14 million in the U.S. against a rather small $80 budget. This is bad news for the movie all around as its less than 25 percent of what they spent on production. To be a success, most major studio films need to make back at least 50 percent of their budget in the first weekend.
The only good thing right now is that it ended up making roughly $30 million in ticket sales in the foreign markets. Set against other franchise releases like Saw X and the family friendly Paw Patrol it was relatively doomed to fail. Also, the SAG strikes hurt any promotion that could be done for the film since actors are not allowed to do the marketing circuit.
Even with a mediocre critical response, the film does deserve to be seen. It features some amazing visuals and action set pieces. It will surely be released to the home streaming market very soon with dwindling returns.
