Initially announced in 2019, the long gestating reboot of Battlestar Galactica has officially been cancelled by streaming outlet, Peacock. Although another relaunch of the science fiction action series wasn't needed, the outlet had been in the developmental stages for several years. However, today Variety reports that the series will not be made and will potentially be shopped to other streaming services.
The original BSG created by Glen A. Larson aired for one season on ABC and was a product of the major success of Star Wars. The first series, even though it wasn't very successful, went on to spawn comic books, books, spin-off series, and video games.
The series was then rebooted in 2003 by Ronald D. Moore and the Sci-Fi Channel (SyFy now) and ran for many seasons. That show also spawned many other projects including the short-lived Caprica.
In the Battlestar Galactica lore, humans have escaped earth due to war and now live in colonies in the reaches of space. They do battle with Cylons attempting to survive.
The new series was supposedly set during the same continuity as the rebooted SyFy show and would have been directly connected in some way. Yet, no story details had ever been leaked. It appears, for now, that the show is officially dead until someone else picks it up.
