Despite mixed critical reception from fans and general audiences alike, 2024's Alien:Romulus proved to be a horror hit for 20th Century Studios. The film grossed just over $350 million worldwide with talks of a sequel happening within weeks of its release. We were almost instantly guaranteed a continuation that will hopefully see the main protagonist making a return for the next chapter in the decades long Alien saga. When speaking with Empire Online, Alvarez talked about the second in this portion of the series and had this to say:
"We're excited about where it can go. We've almost checked all the boxes of things that I want to see in Romulus. And brought back a lot of the things I hadn't seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters."
After all, Alien: Romulus was a sort of return to form for the Xenomorphs and got away from Ridley Scott's dreadful Covenant but did build further on the existing mythology. It sounds like Alvarez has some creative ideas moving forward with the saga and teases that we may get some refreshing new plot devices:
"I think it will be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we've never been before and to discover things that you've never seen before."
At least it sounds like we won't get a retread of Alien III or Alien Covenant where many of the central characters were killed off screen between films. So, at least there's that.
The next iteration of Alien is set to hit tv screens in summer 2025 with Alien:Earth.
